Founded in 1926, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum has nine galleries in which it emphasized 18th- through twentieth-century American art. It was begun following the bequest of Harriet Allyn, the daughter of New London whaling captain and businessman Lyman Allyn. The facility opened in 1932.
