Constantius II was emperor of Rome from 337 to 361 CE. He was the son of Constantine the Great and Fausta, and had two brothers, Constantine II and Constans I. The three brothers shared power until Constantine II died in 340 and Constans I died in 350. From then, Constantius II ruled alone. He pursued religious unity under Arrian Christianity and executed the orthodox bishop of Alexandria twice, in 339 and 356. However, his desired unity was never achieved. From 338 to 350, there was bloody warfare against Persian ruler Shāpūr II to no great result. In 359, conflict with Shāpūr II resumed in the east. In 361, the governor of Gaul Julian revolted and Constantius II moved back west to confront him, but died on the way there.
