In 1864, the bank was recognized nationally and became the National Whaling Bank. Following the decline of the whaling industry in New London, the bank closed and the building was sold and became the Thames Crockery, a restaurant supply business. Shortly after, a cafe called Mugz took over the building. After changing hands once again, Muddy Waters, another cafe, took over the structure and still operates there today. The site references two eras of New London’s history and present: the presence and influence of the whaling industry and the modern site of community gathering and commerce. Title A name given to the resource Times Change: The raised pedestrian footbridge Contributor An entity responsible for making contributions to the resource Marian Hancock-Cerutti Source A related resource from which the described resource is derived <a href="https://www.newlondonlandmarks.org/">New London Landmarks</a> Description An account of the resource Though today’s Union Station looks remarkably similar to the 1887 original, some things have changed—namely the raised pedestrian footbridge, shown in this photograph, which was built in 1912 to aid passengers in crossing the tracks to the platform on the waterfront side. As money became tight for the New Haven Railroad in the early 1900s, station repairs and infrastructure maintenance were the first areas to lose funding. Shortly thereafter, the footbridge was in dire need of repair. Upon learning that the demolition of the footbridge would cost only around $1,250, the New Haven Railroad petitioned the Public Utilities Commission in 1953 for permission to tear it town. This request was denied, and the railroad attempted once more in 1961, when the Commission finally agreed, and the bridge was torn down. A study conducted by the railroad found that around five times more people crossed the tracks using the street level crosswalk than the pedestrian bridge, and that most people who did access the bridge were using it to gain a better view of the downtown harbor. This clipping shows a pair of newlyweds posing in front of the footbridge in 1944, before boarding a train to New York City. Title A name given to the resource New London Harbor Lighthouse Description An account of the resource Constructed in 1760, the New London Harbor Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Connecticut and the fourth oldest in all of the United States. As a landmark in the “history of navigation,” it was officially registered as a National Historic Site in 1990. The preservation documentation credits its significance in the history of engineering and transportation. Although it is no longer in operation, the lighthouse today is owned by the New London Maritime Society, a member of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act program. Title A name given to the resource Starr Street Description An account of the resource Starr Street was first developed in 1804, when developer William Culver sold some of his land following a fire. A rope factory was built on one side of the street and five residential homes on the other. After the factory closed, an additional three residences were built in its place. As architects were hard to come by in early 1800s America, these houses were actually designed by local carpenters using plans from French and English architects. As New London came into hard times in the 1970s, Starr Street was scheduled for demolition. The Savings Bank of New London came to the rescue, buying and restoring most of the historic houses. The city contributed as well by connecting Starr Street to its modern utilities grid. Starr Street became New London's first Historic District in 1981. Today, the homes on Starr Street are privately owned, and the owners are required to preserve its historic character.
