<text>BOLD CAPTAIN FRENEY
As I roved out one evening fair
All for to take the pleasant air,
To my good luck I chanced to spy
A jolly Quaker riding by;
	For bold Captain Freney
	For brave Freney, O.

Said the Quaker- 'I am very glad
That I have met with such a lad;
There is a robber on the way,
Bold Captain Freney, I hear them say.'
	For bold Captain Freney
	For brave Freney, O.

I kindly did my friend salute,
As he rode by me very mute:
I asked him where did he design
To take refreshment or to dine.
	For bold Captain Freney,
	For brave Freney, O.

'Captain Freney I disregard,
Although about me I carry my charge;
Because I being so cunning and cute,
It's where I hide it, in my boot.'
	For bold Captain Freney
	For brave Freney, O.

We rode til we came to Thomastown,
'Twas there I bid the Quaker to come down;
'It's on your boot I do design,
Come strip off yours and put on mine,
	For I am bold Captain Freney,'
	For brave Freney, O.

The next I met all on the highway
It was with a tailor dressed full ay,
I took him to be some noble man,
I boldly bid him for to stand,
	For I was bold Captain Freney,
	For brave Freney, O.

'Your footy trifles I disdain,'
With that I returned him his gold again;
'I'll rob no tailor if I can,
For I'd always wish to rob a man,
	For I am bold Captain Freney
	For brave Freney, O.

'It's a little that I ever thought
Like a silly ass I would be caught,
Since it's on my boot thou do design
I see thou art no friend of mine,
	For thou art bold Captain Freney,'
	For brave Freney, O.

Upon his pocket I lay hold,
The first thing I got was a purse of gold,
In the other, to my great surprise,
Some cloth, chalk, thimble, and shears
			likewise,
	For bold Captain Freney,
	For brave Freney, O.

It's time for me to look about,
There's a proclamation just gone out;
There's fifty pounds bid on my head,
To bring me in alive or dead,
	For I am bold Captain Freney,
	For I am brave Freney, O.</text>

I went out in the evening my sweetheart to find,
I stood by her cottage window as well I do mind;
I stood by her cottage window, and I thought I would get in,
But instead of pleasure for me, my sorrows did begin.

Fine colour had my darling though it was not me was there,
I did not sit beside her, but inside there was a pair.
I stood outside her window, most like a motherless foal,
And I waited till my own name was brought across the coals.

Here's a health unto the blackbird that sings upon the tree,
And here's to the willy wagtail that goes the road with me.
Here's a health unto my darling and to them she makes her own,
She's deserving of good company - for me I have got none.

My love she is proper and handsome and tall,
For wit and for behaviour she's foremost of them all.
She says she is in no way bound, that with me she'll go free,
But my love has too many lovers to have any love for me.

THE TIME OF DAY
An Irish Captain of Dragoons one day in Oxford town,
Invited jovial friends to dine at the sign of the Crown,
Three English Dandies they came in and sat down to drink wine,
Saying, 'Ma'am, have you got roast beef, we all came here to dine?'

The Landlady made answer, saying, 'It's surely just bespoke,
We've got an Isish gentleman.' 'On him we'll play some joke.
Tell him John Bull must get the beef, let it be lean or fat,
Good murphies, butter and salt fish will answer for Irish Pat.'

One of the lads pulled out a watch, to the waiter he did say,
'Take this up to Irish Pat, let him know the time of day.'
The waiter informed the Captain, 'give me the watch,' said he
'And I'll let them know the time of day and that immediately.'

'Tis with a case of pistols and a small sword by his side,
He thundered out a mighty oath, 'I will take down their pride.'
In entering in into the room 'O gentlemen,' he did say,
'Where is the poor blind man that wants to know the time of day?'

Instantly he drew his sword, 'I always was inclined
To help a poor man in distress, particular the blind;
'Tis with this insturment of steel I mean I'll let you see
I've got a pair of spectacles will answer for him and me.'

Those cowards they hung down their heads and now they shook with fear,
One of those lads exclaiming, 'There's no such person here,'
In turning to the waiter, the Captain he did say,
'I think I may hold the watch for the owner is gone away.'

The dinner was got ready, upstairs the Captain goes,
You'd laugh to see the apish tricks of those three English foes;
Gaping at one another and biting their nails,
Till at length they all departed like dogs that lost their tails.</text>

              <text>BUCKS HAVE AT YE ALL; OR, THE PICTURE OF A PLAYHOUSE
Ye social friends of claret and of wit,
Where'er dispers'd, in merry groups you sit;
Whether below you gild the glitt'ring sence,
Or mount aloft there, on a bold thirteen.
Ye bucks assembl'd at your Ranger's call,
Damme, I know ye - and have at ye all.
The motive here that sets our Bucks on fire,
The gen'rous wish, the first and last desire;
If you with plaudits echo to redrown,
Or urg'd with fury, tear the benches down;
'Tis still the same - to one bright goal we haste,
To show your judgement and approve your taste.
'Tis not in nature for ye to be quiet,
No, damme, Bucks exist but in a riot.
For instance now - to please the ear and charm admiring crowd,
You bucks o' th'boxes sneer and talk aloud!
To the green box next with joyous speed you run,
Hilly ho! ho! my Bucks! well, damme it, what's the fun?
Tho' Shakespeare speaks, regardless of the play,
Ye laugh and loll the sprightly hours away;
For to seem sensible of real merit,
Oh, damme, it's low, it's vulgar, - beneath us lads of spirit.
Your Bucks o'th' pit are miracles of learning,
Who point out faults to shew their own discerning;
And, critic-like, bestriding martyr'd sense,
Proclaim their genius and vast consequence.
The side-long row, whose keener views of bliss
Are chiefly centered in some favourite Miss;
A set of jovial Bucks who here resort,
Flush from the tavern, reeling ripe for sport,
Wak'd from their dream, oft joined the general roar,
With bravo, bravo - bravissimo, et damme, encore
Or, skipping that, behold another row,
Supplied with citizens or smiling beau:
Addressing Miss, whose cardinal protection,
Keeps her quite safe from ranc'rous detraction,
Whose lively eyes beneath a down drawn hat,
Gives hint she loves a little - you know what.
Ye Bucks above who range like gods at large,
Nay, pray don't grin, but listen to your charge,
You who design to change this scene to raillery,
And out-talk players in the upper gallery:
Oh, there's a youth, and one o' th'sprightly sort,
I don't mean you - damme, you've not features for 't.
Who slily skulks to hidden station,
While players follow their vocation,
Whistle, 'off, off, off, Nosee, Roast Beet' - there's education.
Now, I've explored this mimic world quite thro'.
An set each country's little faults to view:
In the right sense receive the well-meant jest,
And keep the moral still within your breast;
Convinc'd I'd not in heart or tongue offend,
Your hands acquit me, and I've gain'd my end.</text>

              <text>THEODORE TO HIS GRANDSON
Grandson
O gamfer: you are lined and old,
		Your nose is blue, your hands are cold,
		Your wrinkles twist and groove and fold,
		Your withered spine is bending.

		O tell this child, this little lad,
		What you were like when you were bad,
		And what defence you could have had
		Could aught deserve defending?

Theodore
Why as to that, my little son,
		Blood spilt is spilt, man dead is done,
		We took and blowed em from a gun,
		Or sawed em in halves, sir.

		And rum, red rum, is my delight.
		It makes me old hulk watertight;
		Or give me two dogs to set to fight
		Tradoodle.
	Wolfe T. Mac Gowan

WHY THOMAS CAM WAS GRUMPY
If I were rich what would I do?
I'd leave the horse just ready to shoe,
I'd leave the pail beside the cow,
I'd leave the furrow beneath the plough,
I'd leave the ducks tho' they should quack;
'Our eggs will be broke before you're back.'
I'd buy a diamond brooch, a ring,
A golden chain which I would fling
Around her neck .... Ah, what an itch,
If I were rich.

What would I do if I were wise?
I wouldn't debate about the skies,
I wouldn't try a book to write
Or find the wrong in the tangled right,
I wouldn't debate with learned men,
Of how, and what, and why, and when.
I'd train my tongue to a linnet's song,
I'd learn the words that couldn't go wrong-
And then I'd say .... And win the prize,
If I were wise.

But I'm not that or t'other, I bow
My back to the work that's waiting now,
I'll show the hose that's standing ready,
I'll milk the cow if she'll be steady,
I'll follow the plough that turns the loam,
I'll watch the ducks that lay from home.
And curse, and curse, and curse again
Till the devil joins in with his deep amen,
And none but he and I will wot
When the heart that's in me starts to rot,
To fester and churn its ugly brew:
... Where's my spade, I've work to do.

<p>It is not to irritate or kindle a debate<br />That we should explicate the purpose of his praise,<br />For were we to present it to our Parliament,<br />It was by God's consent he won their glorious lays.<br />It was with obedience he with nobles did agree,<br />He left his country to humble England's boast,<br />Where Donnelly the Great who did his foes defeat,<br />He made our Shamrock smile all on the British coast.</p></text>

THE BLACKBIRD
Once on a morning of sweet recreation,
	I heard a fair lady a-making her moan,
With sighing and sobbing, and sad lamentation,
	Aye singing, 'My Blackbird for ever is flown!
He's all my heart's treasure, my joy and my pleasure,
	So justly, my love, my heart follows thee;
And I am resolved, in foul or fair weather,
	To seek out my Blackbird, wherever he be.

'I will go, a stranger to peril and danger,
	My heart is so loyal in every degree;
For he's constant and kind, and courageous in mind,
	Good luck to my Blackbird, wherever he be!
In Scotland he's loved and dearly approved,
	In England a stranger he seemeth to be;
But his name I'll advance in Ireland or France,
	Good luck to my Blackbird, wherever he be!

'The birds of the forest are all met together,
	The turtle is chosen to dwell with the dove,
And I am resolved, in foul or fair weather,
	Once in the spring-time to seek out my love.
But since fickle Fortune, which still proves uncertain,
	Hath caused this parting between him and me,
His right I'll proclaim, and who dares me blame?
	Good luck to my Blackbird wherever he be!'</text>

              <text>BRENNAN ON THE MOOR
It's of a fearless highwayman a story I will tell,
His name was WIllie Brennan and in Ireland  he did dwell;
And in the Kilworth mountains he commenced his wild career,
And many a wealthy gentleman before him shook with fear,
	Brennan on the Moor.

A brace of loaded pistols he carried night and day,
He never robbed a poor man upon the king's highway;
But what he'd taken from the rich, like Turpin and Black Bess,
He always did divide it with the widow in distress.

One night he robbed a man of the name of Pedlar Bawn,
They travelling on together till the day began to dawn;
The pedlar seeing his money gone, likewise his watch and chain,
He at once encountered Brennan and robbed him back again.

When Brennan saw the pedlar was as good a man as he
He took him on the highway his companion for to be;
The pedlar threw away his pack without any more delay,
And proved a faithful comrade until his dying day.

One day upon the highways as Willie he sat down
He met the Mayor of Cashel a mile outside the town;
The Mayor he knew his features- 'I think young man,' says he,
'Your name is Willie Brennan, you must come along with me.'

Now Brennan's wife had gone to town provisions for to buy,
When she saw her Willie taken she began to weep and cry;
Says he, 'Give me that tenpenny;' as soon as Willie spoke
She handed him a blunderbuss from underneath her cloak.

Then with this loaded blunderbuss, the truth I will unfold,
He made the Mayor to tremble and he robbed him of his gold;
One hundred pounds was offered for his apprehension there,
And he, with his horse and saddle, to the mountains did repair.

Then Brennan being an outlaw, upon the mountains high,
Where cavalry and infantry to take him they did try;
He laughed at them with scorn, until at length, it's said,
By a false-hearted young man he was basely betrayed.

In the County Tipperary, in a place they call Clonmore,
Willie Brennan and his comrade that day did suffer sore;
He lay amongst the fern, which was thick upon the field,
And nine wounds he did receive before that he did yield.

Then Brennan and his comrade, knowing they were betrayed,
He with the mounted cavalry a noble battle made,
He lost his foremost finger, which was shot off by a ball,
So Brennan and his comrade they were taken after all.

So they were taken prisoners, in irons they were bound,
And conveyed to Clonmel gaol; strong walls did them surround;
They were tried and found guilty, the judge made this reply,
'for robbing on the King's highway you're both condemned to die.'

Farewell unto my wife and to my children three,
Likewise my aged father, he may shed tears for me;
And for my loving mother, who tore her grey locks and cried,
Saying: 'I wish Willie Brennan in your cradle you had died.'</text>

              <text>O'REILLY FROM THE COUNTY KERRY
I wish I had you in Phoenix Island,
One hundred miles from your native home
Or in some valley where none could find you
You might consent then to be my own.
For there I would caress my jewel,
If along with me you'd incline to go,
I'll sail you over to Pennsylvania,
So I'd bid adieu to Reilly evermore.

You have not me in Phoenix Island,
One hundred miles from my native home
Or in a valley where none can find me,
So I'll not incline then to be your own.
So therefore don't tease me nor displease me,
But along with you I'm not inclined to go,
So do sail over to where you came from,
For I'll wait then for Reilly evermore.

THE FUGITIVE
The limestone road that leads to town -
I go along that road;
'Tis soon I'll reach the jetty where
The Spanish schooners load.

The maiden river trips along
To marriage with the sea,
A witness to that marriage rite
In half an hour I'll be.

I'll see the lancers and the hussars,
I'll step behind the band,
I'll dance to Mike the Fiddler's jig
Down by the jarvey stand.

I'll see the Fenian's monument
Who for old Ireland died,
I'll watch the merchant's daughters fair,
Rich suitors by their side.

And then within the circus tent
The steeds of piebald brown;
The damsel diving through the hoop,
The juggler, jock and clown.

The children would make game of me
And call me Country Dan,
But Donal More from this day's dark
Will be a city man.

The dusty road that leads to town,
I've travelled all the road,
The Spanish Captain hears my tale
And bids me step on board.
Con O'Leary.</text>
