New London’s Navy Yard was transformed into a submarine base, playing a critical role in the United States’ military endeavors. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 ushered the US into the Second World War, the Sub Base was expanded by 300 acres, the largest expansion of all submarine bases across the nation. The Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL), which is still in operation today, was founded in 1942 at the Base to study sonar, night vision, and diving solutions for the front. This peninsula became extremely relevant to the history of the United States as a whole in 2005 with the ruling of the Supreme Court in Kelo v. New London. The ruling determined that the "public use" provision of the "takings clause" of the 5th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution permits the use of eminent domain for economic development purposes that provide a public benefit. A private owner demolished 15 residential homes in line with a "comprehensive redevelopment plan" implemented by the city. Title A name given to the resource Starr Street Description An account of the resource Starr Street was first developed in 1804, when developer William Culver sold some of his land following a fire. A rope factory was built on one side of the street and five residential homes on the other. After the factory closed, an additional three residences were built in its place. As architects were hard to come by in early 1800s America, these houses were actually designed by local carpenters using plans from French and English architects. As New London came into hard times in the 1970s, Starr Street was scheduled for demolition. The Savings Bank of New London came to the rescue, buying and restoring most of the historic houses. The city contributed as well by connecting Starr Street to its modern utilities grid. Starr Street became New London's first Historic District in 1981. Today, the homes on Starr Street are privately owned, and the owners are required to preserve its historic character. Title A name given to the resource New London Custom House Description An account of the resource Coast (Defense), Grace McGee The New London Custom House (1833) is the site of New London’s integral efforts to thrive as a port city through the presence of the United States Customs Service. The USCS combats maritime piracy and regulated embargos. The federal government still uses the Custom House for official business, which makes it the oldest continuously operating custom house in the United States. Additionally, the building houses the New London Maritime Society, which operates as a source of New London’s maritime history. Today, the Custom House stands as a testament to the longevity of New London’s maritime history, both with the Maritime Society as a source of historical objects and documents and with the federal government activities still occurring in the building, after hundreds of years. The Center was founded in 2006 as a response to the tragedy of a homeless man, named Bill Walsh, who froze to death in the woods just a week after the New London Winter Shelter had closed. Though located primarily on the first floor of the former St. Peter & Paul Church at 730 State Pier Road, the center also operates an overnight shelter at a different location, renovated in 2013, in which all 40 beds are occupied almost every night. Today, the center aids about 600 people each year, aiming to look at each person’s case individually and address the issues of their particular situation, with the goal of finding each person permanent housing. Title A name given to the resource Congregation Beth El Description An account of the resource Founded in 1924 in hopes of a more “modern and more inclusive form of worship,” Congregation Beth El remains a vibrant presence in Jewish life in New London to this day. In 1925, the congregation purchased the Prest House at 60 Blackhall St, which had previously been the Jewish Community Center. However, as both the congregation and the overall Jewish community in New London shrank over the next century, Congregation Beth El found that the Prest House had become too big and difficult to maintain. In 2017, the building was purchased by an educational resource center called Learn. Currently, Congregation Beth EL does not have a permanent location.
