Title A name given to the resource New London City Hall Description An account of the resource New London‘s City Hall, on State Street, was originally constructed in 1856 in the Italianate style. This building then had a more residential appearance, in keeping with the houses that lined State Street in the mid-nineteenth century. By the early twentieth century, however, large commercial buildings dominated the street and many in the city government wanted a more imposing Municipal Building to assert civic pride. City Hall was therefore substantially remodeled in 1912. The original design, by W.T. Hallett of Norwich, was replaced with an imposing classical Beaux-Arts exterior, designed by the New London architect, James Sweeney. Title A name given to the resource The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, est. 1926 Description An account of the resource The Museum was established in 1926 as a gift of New London resident Harriet Allyn in honor of her father and opened its doors in 1932. Allyn’s father, Captain Lyman Allyn, began his career in whaling and eventually branched out into the banking, insurance, and railroad industries. Harriet Allyn bequeathed funds for the Museum in her will, which also donated land to the Connecticut College for Women, and the Museum still has a close relationship with the College today. Architect Charles A. Platt was hired “to design an elegant neo-classical granite structure on a hill overlooking New London and the Thames River." At the time of opening, the Museum held thirteen works but it now is home to 17,000 pieces of American art. The Lyman Allyn prides itself on providing art education to local school children as budgets for art education programs are cut. Title A name given to the resource United States Coast Guard Academy Description An account of the resource Established in 1790, the Coast Guard is the first "seagoing" military force in the country. Its Academy was founded in 1910 at Fort Trumbull as cadets sailed the tall ship Itasca to this quiet seaside town. The City of New London donated the land for its current site to the US Government in 1932. Additionally, the Allyn and Payne estates of New London contributed funds to build facilities. The Academy offers nine different programs of study, ranging from Civil and Mechanical Engineering to Naval Architecture and Government. In 1966, the school admitted its first African American cadet, with the declaration of full racial integration. Ten years later, the Academy opened its doors to women, and in 1980, admitted the first international cadet. Although it is the smallest of all the military academies, with about 1000 cadets, its commitment to our national safety is second to none. The school’s motto, “the sea yields to knowledge,” is a fitting tribute to New London as a “city on the sea”. Description An account of the resource IIn 1932, citizens of New London donated land to the US Treasury to move the Coast Guard Academy from its original location at Fort Trumbull to its present site. This postcard depicts cadets in a uniform procession, most likely, a “Regimental Review.” This event, one of the oldest traditions at the Academy, takes place about six times a year in order to teach cadets critical qualities: confidence, leadership, and poise. It was the last station that famed architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886) designed before his death. Because Union Station is located on the Northeast corridor it serves both local lines and larger train lines such as Amtrak, and as a connection to the ferries to Long Island and Fishers Island, and Block Island. It is one of the oldest and most characteristic buildings that remains from the new London of the 19th century. Over the years its ownership has changed hands and additions such as the footbridge, have been built and removed. In the 1970s the station underwent a significant restoration, but remains visibly very similar to its original standing.  Still Image A static visual representation. New London’s location between Boston and New York meant that it was a hot spot for travelers. New London experienced a rise in tourism during the turn of the century. As seen in this postcard from the 1910s, the interior of the hotel was designed with elegant, comfortable furniture to make the hotel experience luxurious. In 1864, the bank was recognized nationally and became the National Whaling Bank. Following the decline of the whaling industry in New London, the bank closed and the building was sold and became the Thames Crockery, a restaurant supply business. Shortly after, a cafe called Mugz took over the building. After changing hands once again, Muddy Waters, another cafe, took over the structure and still operates there today. The site references two eras of New London’s history and present: the presence and influence of the whaling industry and the modern site of community gathering and commerce.
