Title A name given to the resource Fort Trumbull Area Description An account of the resource The eastern corner of New London comprises a peninsula commonly referred to as the Fort Trumbell area. This peninsula became extremely relevant to the history of the United States as a whole in 2005 with the ruling of the Supreme Court in Kelo v. New London. The ruling determined that the "public use" provision of the "takings clause" of the 5th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution permits the use of eminent domain for economic development purposes that provide a public benefit. A private owner demolished 15 residential homes in line with a "comprehensive redevelopment plan" implemented by the city. However, after financial struggles he abandoned the site and it remains empty today in 2019. Title A name given to the resource Riverside Park Description An account of the resource In its current state, Riverside Park reaches 18 acres from the banks of the Thames River upward towards the neighborhoods behind Hodges Square. The park’s dwindling attendance record and successive attempts to sell off the land to the neighboring Coast Guard Academy reveal deeper problems with New London’s historical development. In Riverside park’s heyday it was a celebration of New London’s affluence, featuring the Yale-Harvard Regatta and recreational all year round beginning in 1893. However following the segregation of the greater Hodges Square area by the construction of I-95, isolation caused neglect. New London citizens rescued the park in 2011, creating the Riverside Park Conservancy to ensure its survival. My brothers, Tom and Scott Eshenfelder were commercial fisherman looking for space to house a lobster holding facility. We entered into a Lease with the New London Redevelopment Agency in 1994, I included a picture of what the site looked like at that time ( I believe the city actually took this property through eminent domain from the ferry company in 1960s). T.A. Scott Fisheries was the first business to start here. A lobster holding facility where we bought lobsters from local fisherman and sold them to restaurants and grocery stores. We soon discovered that this would be a pretty unique location for an outdoor restaurant. Captain Scott's is named after our great great great Grandfather, T.A.Scott, who had a marine salvage business here in New London on Pequot Ave. back in the late 1800s. It was the last station that famed architect Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886) designed before his death. Because Union Station is located on the Northeast corridor it serves both local lines and larger train lines such as Amtrak, and as a connection to the ferries to Long Island and Fishers Island, and Block Island. It is one of the oldest and most characteristic buildings that remains from the new London of the 19th century. Over the years its ownership has changed hands and additions such as the footbridge, have been built and removed. Title A name given to the resource Connecticut College Description An account of the resource Although Connecticut College's current relationship with the city of New London remains tenuous, the historical legacy of these two places are undeniably intertwined. Upon Wesleyan’s decision to stop admitting women in 1909, the people of Connecticut took it upon themselves to provide a higher education pathway for women. Three New London families; the Alexanders, the Branch family, and the Egglestons donated large plots to house the campus. The first structure, New London Hall, was made possible by the donations of countless New London citizens who, to encourage the College’s rapid development, each gave one day’s wage to fund the project. Built for $135,000 using both regional materials and local labor, New London Hall was named for the local residents who had campaigned so actively to first provide a beautiful site for the future campus, and then the means with which to make that campus a reality. This dynamic relationship flourished until the 1970s when large numbers of students were no longer housed in downtown neighborhoods, and eventually students were entirely dissuaded from off campus residence in 2015. Individual buildings and masterplans express the architectural values held by society of the time. President Blunt oversaw the construction of seven dormitories and Palmer Auditorium, which expanded the college remarkably. The construction of Palmer connected the campus to the greater New London community. The theater continues to offer concerts and lectures by distinguished individuals including Billy Joel, Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Toni Morrison.
