As money became tight for the New Haven Railroad in the early 1900s, station repairs and infrastructure maintenance were the first areas to lose funding. Shortly thereafter, the footbridge was in dire need of repair. Upon learning that the demolition of the footbridge would cost only around $1,250, the New Haven Railroad petitioned the Public Utilities Commission in 1953 for permission to tear it town. This request was denied, and the railroad attempted once more in 1961, when the Commission finally agreed, and the bridge was torn down. A study conducted by the railroad found that around five times more people crossed the tracks using the street level crosswalk than the pedestrian bridge, and that most people who did access the bridge were using it to gain a better view of the downtown harbor. As a landmark in the “history of navigation,” it was officially registered as a National Historic Site in 1990. The Center was founded in 2006 as a response to the tragedy of a homeless man, named Bill Walsh, who froze to death in the woods just a week after the New London Winter Shelter had closed. Though located primarily on the first floor of the former St. Peter & Paul Church at 730 State Pier Road, the center also operates an overnight shelter at a different location, renovated in 2013, in which all 40 beds are occupied almost every night. Today, the center aids about 600 people each year, aiming to look at each person’s case individually and address the issues of their particular situation, with the goal of finding each person permanent housing. Title A name given to the resource Fort Trumbull Description An account of the resource New London’s geography as a deep-water harbor has shaped its maritime commercial and military history. Already in the late 18th century, the city was an important port of entry, and a defense fort was built on Mamacock. In the fervor and chaos of the American Revolution, New London was a major target for the British as a gateway city and privateering hub known for its wealth and patriotism. The small defense site on the Thames River was deemed inadequate protection against possible British invasion. By 1777, the renovated and expanded fortifications were renamed Fort Trumbull. The site was turned into a Connecticut State park in 2002. The historic structure and museum features reconstructions of the fort’s 19th century living quarters and a 1950s research laboratory. Description An account of the resource In 1910, U.S. Coast Guard Academy Cadets sailed the Itasca (a tall ship similar to the ones seen in this postcard) to Fort Trumbull, claiming it for the Academy.
