<text>FULLER AND WARREN
Ye sons of Columbia, your attention I do crave,
While a sorrowful story I do tell,
Which happened of late, in the Indiana state,
And a hero not many could excel;
Like Samson he courted, made choice of the fair,
And intended to make her his wife;
But she, like Delilah, his heart did ensnare,
Which cost him his honor and his life.

A gold ring he gave her in token of his love,
On the face was the image of a dove;
They mutually agreed to get married with speed
And were promised by the powers above.
But the fickle-minded maiden vowed again to wed
To young Warren who lived in that place;
It was a fatal blow that caused his overthrow
And added to her shame and disgrace.

When Fuller came to hear he was deprived of his dear
Whom he vowed by the powers to wed,
With his heart full of woe with Warren he did go,
And smilingly unto him he said:
'Young man, you have injured me to gratify your cause
By reporting that I left a prudent wife;
Acknowledge now that you have wronged me, for although I break the laws,
Young Warren, I'll now deprive you of your life.'

Then Warren he replied: 'your request must be denied,
For your darling to my heart she is bound;
And further I can say that this is our wedding day,
In spite of all the heroes in town.'
Then Fuller in the passion of his love and anger bound, -
Alas! it caused many to cry, -
At one fatal shot killed Warren on the spot,
And smilingly said, 'I'm ready now to die.'

The time was drawing nigh when Fuller had to die;
He bid the audience adieu.
Like an angel he did stand, for he was a handsome man,
On his breast he had a ribbon of blue.
Ten thousand spectators did smite him on the breast,
And the guards dropped a tear from the eye,
Saying, 'Cursed be she who caused this misery,
Would to God in his stead she had to die.'

The gentle god of Love looked with anger from above
And the rope flew asunder like the sand.
Two doctors for the pay they murdered him, they say,
They hung him by main strength of hand.
But the corpse it was buried and the doctors lost their prey,
Oh, that harlot was bribed, I do believe;
Bad women to a certainty are the downfall of men,
As Adam was beguiled by Eve. </text>

              <text>BY MEMORY INSPIRED
	By memory inspired
	And love of country fired,
The deeds of men I love to dwell upon;
	And the patriotic glow
	Of my spirit must bestow
A tribute to O'Connell that is gone, boys, gone:
Here's a memory to the friends that are gone!

	In October 'Ninety-seven-
	May his soul find rest in Heaven-
William Orr to execution was led on:
	The jury, drunk, agreed
	That IRISH was his creed:
For perjury and threats drove them on, boys, on:
Here's the memory of John Mitchell that is gone!

	In 'Ninety-eight - the month of July-
	The informer's pay was high:
When Reynolds gave the gallows brave MacCann;
	But MacCann was Reynold's first-
	One could not allay his thirst;
So he brought up Bond and Byrne that are gone, boys, gone:
Here's the memory of the friends that are done!

	We saw a nation's tears
	Shed for John and Henry Shears;
Betrayed by Judas, Captain Armstrong;
	We may forgive, but yet
	We never can forget
The poisoning of Maguire that is gone, boys, gone:
Our high star and true apostle that is gone!

	How did Lord Edward die?
	Like a man, without a sigh!
And he left his handiwork on Major Swan.
	But Sirr, with steel-clad breast,
	And coward heart at best,
Left us cause to mourn Lord Edward that is gone, boys, gone:
Here's the memory of our friends that are gone!

	September, Eighty-three.
	Closed this cruel history,
When Emmet's blood the scaffold flowed upon:
	O, had their spirits been wise,
	They might then realize
Their freedom - but we drink to Mitchell that is gone, boys, gone:
Here's the memory of our friends that are gone!

              <text>THE COOLUN
A honey mist on a day of frost, in a dark wood,
And love for thee in my heart in me, thou bright, white, and good;
Thy slender form, soft and warm, thy red lips apart,
Thous hast found me, and hast bound me, and put grief in my heart.

In fair-green and market, men mark thee, bright, young, and merry,
Though thou hurt them like foes with the rose of thy blush of the berry;
Her cheeks are a poppy, her eye it is Cupid's helper,
But each foolish man dreams that its beams for himself are.

Whoe'er saw the Coolum in a cool dewy meadow
On a morning in summer in sunshine and shadow;
All the young men go wild for her, my childeen, my treasure,
But now let them go mope, they've no hope to posess her.

Let us roam, O my darling, afar through the mountains,
Drink milk of the goat, wine and bulcaun in fountains;
With music and play every day from my lyre,
And leave to come rest on my breast when you tire.

THE RED MAN'S WIFE
'Tis what they say,
	Thy little heel fits in a shoe.
'Tis what they say,
	Thy little mouth kisses well, too.
'Tis what they say,
	Thousand loves that you leave me to rue;
That the tailor went the way
	That the wife of the Red man knew.

Nine months did I spend
	In a prison closed tightly and bound;
Bolts on my smalls
	And a thousand locks frowning around;
But o'er the tide
	I would leap with the leap of a swan,
Could I once set my side
	By the bride of the Red-haired man.

I thought, O my life,
	That one house between us would be;
And I thought I would find
	You once coaxing my child on your knee;
But now the curse of the High One
	On him let it be,
And on all of the band of the liars
	Who put silence between you and me.

There grows a tree in the garden
	With blossoms that tremble and shake,
I lay my hand on its bark
	And I feel that my heart must break.
On one wish alone
	My soul through the long months ran,
One little kiss
	From the wife of the Red-haired man.

But the Day of Doom shall come
	And hills and harbours be rent;
A mist shall fall on the sun
	From the dark clouds heavily sent;
The sea shall be dry,
	And earth under mourning and ban;
Then loud shall he cry
	For the wife of the Red-haired man.</text>

              <text>A MORAL BALLAD OF THE PLAGUE OF EYAM, 1666
In the separate valleys of Derbyshire,
	Where the Peak is high and deep,
By rumour 'twas known, that the plague of towns
	Gave London man to weep.

One morning then in a village hid -
	Bright came the sun through the glen -
Softly people began to die,
	Children women and men.

No sickness, or orderly sign they gave,
	Had they risen into the clouds -
Not more bewildered their friends had stood,
	Who now fumbled with their shrouds.

Many they missed, before the Plague
	Was named - named with a scream:
'The tailor's parcel from London 'twas!'
	And the rich fled out of Eyam.

The rooks fled too, for they too are sure
	Of a lodging in every state;
They rose, and above that place on the sky
	They put the black mark of fate.
But men have invented the poverty
	Which compels to sit and wait.

Death silently leapt from house to house,
	Or desisted for a day,
Only to pounce on a springing hope ...
	Till he nearly lost his prey:

The villagers now must have made stampede,
	Beside themselves young and old,
But Mompesson on the name of God
	Their duty to their neighbours told.

When they dared not to come together in church
	He preached from a cave in the dell:
Standing between the living and dead
	As the prophet in Israel.

As the people obeyed - O wondrous power
	The multitude to restrain! -
Not one beyond the village of streams
	Would bear its singular bane.

One woman resisted, one woman alone,
	And against the parson cried;
Every day, by the pump and cross,
	She cried, while the people died.

'That you live and want to like is sure,
	But guesses your praise and prayer;
Much good he has done, who your spirits won
	From panic to dull despair!

Your flesh is warm and your blood still stirs,
	Leave now this filthy place.
Why stayed that crow when the rest did no? -
	Keep his black coast from my face!'

Yet whenever she started up the path
	Which traversed the parish bounds,
She saw that strong and gentle man,
And though she defied his will and ran
	His words pursued like hounds.
She turned again, and her impotence
	Lamented with angry sounds.

But she broke away at last, and fled
	The unreal time and place;
In frenzy she ran over heather and road,
	Till she came to Sheffeld gates.

Visitation of Eyam well known around!
	Whence she came 'twas plain to see;
And the scared people stoned her to death,
	To such an end came she.

              <text>
Once upon a time
And a very good time it was too,
When pigs were swine
And monkeys chewed tobacco,
When birds made nests in old mens beards
And the houses were thatched with tuppeny loaves,
And the streets were paved with pancakes.
And a little pig ran through the streets,
With a knife and a fork stuck in his back
Crying "Eat me- Eat me- Eat me."

RHYMES OF THE GITANOS
Translated by George Burrow
There runs a swine down yonder hill,
As fast as e'er he can,
Ans as he runs he crieth still,
Come steal me, Gipsy man.

I wash'd not in the limpid flood
The shirt which binds my frame;
But in Juanito Ralli's blood.
I bravely wash'd the same.

I for a cup of water cried,
But they refused my prayer,
Then straight into the road I hied.
And fell to robbing there.

They came adown the village street,
With the little babes that cry,
Because they have no crust to eat,
A gipsy company;
And as no charity they meet,
They curse the Lord on high.

I left home and walk'd about,
They seized me fast and bound;
It is a gypsy thief, they shout,
The Spaniards here have found.

O, I am not of gentle clan,
I'm sprung from gypsy tree;
And I will be no gentleman;
But an Egyptian free.

The girl I love more dear than life,
Should other gallant woo,
I'd straight unsheath my dungeoned knife
And cut his weasand through;
Or he, the conqueror in the strife,
The same to me should do.

Loud sang the Spanish Chavalier,
And thus his ditty ran:
God send the Gypsy lassie here,
And not the Gypsy man.
</text>

This couple they got married, Miss
Elizabeth and Dan.
And he lived with her father, and her mother
And his charmer, O,
And they went for ever after by the
Name of 'Thank you ma'am.'

I wish I was in Banagher
	Sitting on the grass,
In my hand a bottle of wine
	And on my knee a lass.

O Bill, O Bill, O cousin Jane,
Come out now never mind the rain,
She's outward bound to Port of Spain
	O Maggie, Sarah!
She's off, upon the starboard tack,
Run up and dip the ensign, Jack,
O ain't it like the old time back
	Upon the Gara. </text>

              <text>THE FLASH FRIGATE
I sing of a frigate, a frigate of fame,
And in the West Indies she bore a great name
For cruel hard treatment of every degree,
Like slaves in the gallies we ploughed the salt sea.

At four in the morning our day's work's begun,
'Come lash up your hammocks, boys, ev-e-ry one,'
Seven turns with the lashing so equal must show,
And all of one size through a hoop they must go.

The next thing we do is to holystone decks,
Mizzen-topmen from the fore-hatch their buckets must fetch;
And it's 'Fore and main-top men' so loudly they bawl,
'Come broom aft the sand with your squilgees and all.'

The decks being scrubbed, and the rigging coiled down,
It is now, 'Clear your bright work,' which is found all around,
Your gun-caps and aprons so neatly must shine,
And in white frocks and trousers you must all toe a line.

The next thing we hear is 'All hands to make sail,'
'Way aloft.' and 'lay out,' and 'let fall' is the hail.
O your royals and your sky-sail, and your moonsails so high,
At the sound of the call they must all be let fly.

But now, my brave boys, comes the best of the fun;
'All hands about ship and reef topsails,' in one.
O it's lay aloft topmen,' as the hellum goes down,
And it's 'clew down your topsails,' as you 'let go and haul.'

Our senior lieutenant, you all know him well,
He comes upon deck, and he cuts a great swell.
O, it's 'bear a hand here, boys,' and 'mind what you're at,'
And at the lee gangway he serves out the cat.

There is no games aboard her, and so you will find,
If you spit on her decks, why, your death-warrant's signed.
So all you bold seamen who sail the salt sea,
Beware of this frigate wherever you be.

FROM A SLIGO RACE BALLAD
Now from a Dromahaire all will come there,
With the sportsmen of Sligo the country knows well,
There's Carney and Grange they onward will range,
And all the brave sportsmen around Lissadell.

Likewise, Mockarow will be here anyhow,
With Cliffoney and Tullaghan all here wil flock,
Like a shot of a cannon comes Ballyshannon,
With the Bundoran bathers and sporting Kinlough.</text>

              <text>THE CHERRY TREE CAROL
Now Joseph was an old man,
	An old man was he,
When he wedded Mary,
	In the land of Galilee.

O then bespoke Mary,
	With words both meek and kind,
'Pluck me some cherries, Joseph,
	They run so in my mind.

O eat your cherries, Mary,
	O eat your cherries now;
O eat your cherries, Mary,
	They grow upon the bough.

'He neither shall be born,
	In housen nor in hall,
Nor in the place of Paradise,
	But in an ox's stall.

As Joseph and Mary walk thro'
	A garden green,
Where cherries and berries,
	Were as thick as might be seen.

Then bowed down the highest tree,
	Unto God's mother's hand,
O then, she cried, 'See, Joseph,
	I have cherries at my command.'

As joseph was a walking,
	He heard an angel sing,
'This night shall be the birth-time
	Of christ our Heavenly King.'

'He neither shall be clothed
	In purple nor in pall,
But all in fair linen,
	That usen babies all.

He neither shall be rocked,
	In silver nor in gold,
But in a wooden manger
	That rested on the mould.'

As Joseph was a walking,
	Then did an angel sing:
And Mary's child at midnight,
	Was born to be our King.

Then be ye glad, good people,
	This night of all the year,
And light ye up your candles,
	For his star it shineth clear.

THE COLLIER
You may know a jolly collier as he walks on the street,
His clothing is so handsome, and so neat are his feet;
With teeth as white as ivory, and his eyes as black as soles,
You may know a jolly collier wherever he goes.

You may know a jolly collier, he's a swaggering young blade,
When he goes a-courting of his buxom fair maid;
With his lips he so flatters her, and he spends his money free,
You may know a jolly collier wheresoever that he be.

You may know a jolly collier as he sails the salt sea;
As he ploughs the wide ocean he sets his sails three,
The foresail for to lift her, and the mainsail to drive,
And the little pretty crojick for to make her steer wild.

I'll build my jolly collier a castle on a hill,
Where neither Duke nor Squire can work me any ill;
For the Queen can but enjoy the King, and I can do the same,
And I am but a sheep-girl, and who can me blame?</text>
