Title A name given to the resource New London Custom House Description An account of the resource Coast (Defense), Grace McGee The New London Custom House (1833) is the site of New London’s integral efforts to thrive as a port city through the presence of the United States Customs Service. The USCS combats maritime piracy and regulated embargos. The federal government still uses the Custom House for official business, which makes it the oldest continuously operating custom house in the United States. Additionally, the building houses the New London Maritime Society, which operates as a source of New London’s maritime history. Today, the Custom House stands as a testament to the longevity of New London’s maritime history, both with the Maritime Society as a source of historical objects and documents and with the federal government activities still occurring in the building, after hundreds of years. Title A name given to the resource Public Library of New London Description An account of the resource Built in 1889-91, the Public Library of New London was gifted to the city by Henry Philomen Haven. The library building is notable for its design by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, an architecture firm famous for its civic buildings across New England. It is designed in the Richardsonian style, named after Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886), a leading nineteenth-century American architect whose Union Station graces the New London waterfront. The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. In 1974, a 1500-square-foot extension was added to the library, but the original building has remained largely preserved and unchanged since its construction. Title A name given to the resource Fresh New London Subject The topic of the resource Non-Profit Description An account of the resource FRESH New London, a local non-profit which works towards systemic change in agriculture and food production practices, as well as food security and sustainability, empowers volunteers to lend a hand in building and maintaining neighborhood community gardens. The organization has an office in Saint James Episcopal Church, and a garden located behind the church. Since its founding, FRESH has also constructed urban gardens in previously unused space, such as its notable McDonald Park. Most of the produce is grown at the group’s Mercer Urban Farm, in which roughly half of the crops are tended to by local residents, and the other by FRESH staff members. More than just a source of food, the parks and gardens are places for the community to gather, learn, and enjoy themselves. The organization also works to engage with New London’s youth, through its after-school programs at local elementary schools in which it teaches children about agriculture and nutrition, and how the food they eat is grown and distributed. As a response to an increasingly urban environment and a lack of affordable, healthy food, Fresh is both a representation of the issues plaguing New London today, as well as its citizens’ resourcefulness, hard work, and passion for the community. Title A name given to the resource Starr Street Description An account of the resource Starr Street was first developed in 1804, when developer William Culver sold some of his land following a fire. A rope factory was built on one side of the street and five residential homes on the other. After the factory closed, an additional three residences were built in its place. As architects were hard to come by in early 1800s America, these houses were actually designed by local carpenters using plans from French and English architects. As New London came into hard times in the 1970s, Starr Street was scheduled for demolition. The Savings Bank of New London came to the rescue, buying and restoring most of the historic houses. The city contributed as well by connecting Starr Street to its modern utilities grid. Starr Street became New London's first Historic District in 1981. Today, the homes on Starr Street are privately owned, and the owners are required to preserve its historic character.
