Title A name given to the resource New London Custom House Description An account of the resource Coast (Defense), Grace McGee The New London Custom House (1833) is the site of New London’s integral efforts to thrive as a port city through the presence of the United States Customs Service. The USCS combats maritime piracy and regulated embargos. The federal government still uses the Custom House for official business, which makes it the oldest continuously operating custom house in the United States. Additionally, the building houses the New London Maritime Society, which operates as a source of New London’s maritime history. The library building is notable for its design by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, an architecture firm famous for its civic buildings across New England.
