Title A name given to the resource Sheffield Pharmaceuticals Description An account of the resource Commerce, Jamila Ezbidi Sheffield Pharmaceuticals was begun in 1879 by dentist Dr. Washington Sheffield in his home at 170 Broad Street (where he manufactured the first toothpaste) and was later moved to a laboratory on Waller Street in 1893. In 1971, Sheffield Pharmaceuticals was the second largest employer in New London. Despite closing briefly in 1986 due to financial difficulties, the company was bought and continues to operate in New London. Title A name given to the resource New London Custom House Description An account of the resource Coast (Defense), Grace McGee The New London Custom House (1833) is the site of New London’s integral efforts to thrive as a port city through the presence of the United States Customs Service. The USCS combats maritime piracy and regulated embargos. The federal government still uses the Custom House for official business, which makes it the oldest continuously operating custom house in the United States. Additionally, the building houses the New London Maritime Society, which operates as a source of New London’s maritime history. Title A name given to the resource Fort Trumbull Area Description An account of the resource The eastern corner of New London comprises a peninsula commonly referred to as the Fort Trumbell area. This peninsula became extremely relevant to the history of the United States as a whole in 2005 with the ruling of the Supreme Court in Kelo v. New London. The ruling determined that the "public use" provision of the "takings clause" of the 5th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution permits the use of eminent domain for economic development purposes that provide a public benefit. A private owner demolished 15 residential homes in line with a "comprehensive redevelopment plan" implemented by the city. However, after financial struggles he abandoned the site and it remains empty today in 2019.
